An hour and a half later, Garrett strode through the glass door leading into the ER. He’d only stopped long enough to shower off the mud and get into dry clothes. After a quick call to Jules to make sure Charlotte was still okay, he’d come straight to the hospital.

Almost everyone had gotten out in time, loading their cars with their belongings and driving out, but in total, he and his team had rescued one elderly couple and two families—including the children in the mobile home and one couple with a day-old baby—who’d been trapped by the rising water.

A handful of dogs, a couple of cats and a parrot named Bert had also been boated out by various first responders and taken to the local vet for boarding until their owners were safely able to return home.

Garrett heard from the paramedics that Abby was in the ER and he couldn’t rest until he knew she was okay. He found her in one of the small rooms, scrolling through her phone. It looked like she’d managed a shower too, because her hair was damp and she was wearing an oversized green hospital gown.

He cleared his throat. “They’ll just give anyone an exam room these days.”

“Ha ha, very funny.” Abby smirked up at him and the coil of tension he’d been carrying since she sped away on the boat unwound just a bit.

But she had an IV hooked into her arm and when he stepped closer, she pulled the blanket up self-consciously.

“What’s going on here? Did something happen that I don’t know about?”

Her cheeks colored. “It seems that I reopened a wound when I was ‘traipsing around in the flood,’ as the ER doctor put it.”

He dragged a chair up to the side of the bed and sat. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine. Nothing a few more stitches and a whopping dose of antibiotics won’t fix. Apparently floodwater really is as disgusting as it looks.” She rolled her eyes. “Please stop making that face. I’m going to be fine. How’s Charlotte?”

“Apparently, she’s loving life with the Quinns. Jules said she is fascinated by all the kids and the older ones are fighting over who gets to hold her, so she is in hog heaven.”

“I’m sure.” Abby laughed. “Did you get in touch with Tanner and Devin?”

“Yep. Talked to Tanner just now. They’re dry at the moment. The flooding is supposed to crest tomorrow afternoon and then start receding. We’re at a higher elevation than the neighborhoods that flooded today, but tomorrow morning we’re going to move as many of the livestock as we can to higher ground.”

“It’s never flooded before?”

“We’ve had high water in the swampy areas, but the water never reached the fields and pastures, much less the house. This time? The amount of rain dumped upstream... I think the weather people on the news are calling it unprecedented. We won’t know if we’re out of the woods until tomorrow night.”

“You can use the barn at my house if you need it.
